Cursor's Marketplace Served a Backdoored Claude Code Extension
The software you already run was this week's risk: Cursor says its marketplace served backdoored builds of the Claude Code extension on 29 October, and two Claude Code releases changed which prompt and which policy enterprise setups get. Our ratings moved on the same principle, as Claude Opus 5, Claude Haiku 4.5 and GPT-5.6 Sol dropped to conditional because a cheaper successor now lists below each.

Claude Opus 5
Claude Opus 5
Anthropic's models overview groups Claude Opus 5 under legacy models and tells unsure users to start on Claude Opus 5.5, which lists at $4/$20 per 1M tokens against Opus 5's $5/$25. Its model deprecations page still marks Opus 5 Active, with no retirement before 24 July 2027, so keep it only on pipelines you have already validated. Announced October 31.
Claude Haiku 4.5
Claude Haiku 4.5
Anthropic now lists Claude Haiku 4.5 as legacy behind Claude Haiku 5.5, which costs $0.10 input and $0.50 output per 1M tokens up to 100K against $1 and $5. It still works, so keep it for existing integrations while you migrate. Announced October 31.
GPT-5.6 Sol
GPT-5.6 Sol
OpenAI's pricing page lists GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6.1 Sol at $2/$10 per 1M tokens, half GPT-5.6 Sol's $4/$20, which OpenAI calls promotional through at least 21 November 2026. OpenAI lists no deprecation for it. Announced October 31.
Gemini 4 Argon
Gemini 4 Argon
Gemini 4 Argon has been generally available on the paid Gemini API since 13 October at $2/$10 per 1M tokens until 30 November, then $4/$20. Conditional because every benchmark is Google's own and we have not tested it. Announced October 31.
Qwen3.8-Max
Qwen3.8-Max
Alibaba Cloud Model Studio's official pricing page lists Qwen3.8-Max at $2 input and $6 output per 1M tokens (Singapore). Conditional because there is still no benchmark table, no model card and no confirmed open weights. Announced October 31.
Act before next issue
Check Cursor machines for the svc-telemetry SSH key
Cursor says malicious builds of the Claude Code extension (2.1.312 and 2.1.313, macOS and Windows) were live on its marketplace from about 2:27am to 1:35pm PT on 29 October. They add an attacker SSH key, a reverse tunnel and persistence that uninstalling may not remove. Cursor says Anthropic did not build them.
Details & stepsRotate any provider key saved in an OpenCode Console workspace
OpenCode told affected Console users on 17 October that OpenAI, Anthropic and other provider keys saved in their workspaces "may have been exposed", according to its email as quoted by dev.to and reported by Startup Fortune. Revoke and replace them.
Details & stepsUpdate Claude Code to 2.1.314 if you enforce managed settings
Claude Code 2.1.314 (30 October) fixes a bug that let sessions start with no managed policy when the settings server was unreachable, closes a sandbox gap on resumed headless worktrees, and adds permissions.blockWritesOutsideWorkingDirectories.
Details & stepsRecheck custom model names after Claude Code 2.1.312
Claude Code 2.1.312 (27 October) sends the shorter system prompt to any model name it does not recognize on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and Mantle, even when that name fronts Sonnet or Haiku. The same names now get automatic model switches after a flagged message, and the claude_code.safety_event OpenTelemetry event is no longer sent.
Details & stepsSet a permission mode in every headless Claude Code job
Claude Code 2.1.302 (16 October) starts claude -p and Agent SDK sessions that set no permission mode in default mode on third party providers, with telemetry off or on a fresh install. Fork subagents are now on by default outside the terminal.
Details & stepsBudget for DeepSeek Search and Fetch calls
DeepSeek prices Search and Fetch at $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests each. The server side search and fetch calls DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code and Codex make on the DeepSeek API bill at that rate from 00:00 Beijing time on 1 November 2026.
Details & stepsRe-run your evals on deepseek-flash
On 17 October DeepSeek replaced V4.1 Flash with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 behind the unchanged deepseek-flash model name, at unchanged prices. DeepSeek reports Terminal-Bench 4.0 up from 31.2 to 42.3, all on its own runs.
Details & stepsRe-budget Eleven v4 at list price
ElevenLabs' 72% launch discount on Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo has ended, and both now bill at list: $0.08 and $0.04 per 1K characters, up from $0.022 and $0.011.
Details & stepsPrice third party models in Cursor at API list rates
On Cursor's new plans, Claude, GPT and Gemini carry no included allowance: they bill at API list price through top-ups, and only from the $30 Premium tier up. Existing subscribers keep their current plans.
Details & stepsCheck for the Codex CLI background daemon
Codex CLI has started its background server automatically by default since 0.157.0 (25 September), and 0.164.0 (23 October) still does not make it opt in. Users in GitHub issue #48195 report it keeps the first session's environment, so turn it off where per-project credentials matter.
Details & stepsTest voice agents that call grok-voice-latest
xAI says agents on grok-voice-latest were switched to Grok Voice 3.0 on 14 October, at the same $0.08 a minute. Its quality figures come from Artificial Analysis as quoted by xAI, and we have not tested it.
Details & stepsOn our radar
Muse Wonder Preview at $4/$20 per 1M tokens
Meta released Muse Wonder on 12 October as a preview on the Meta Model API (muse-wonder-1.0), with a 1,048,576-token context. The stronger Muse Wonder Full is only in Muse Code's Power Usage and Maximum Usage plans. Every benchmark result is Meta-reported, and we have not tested either.
LiteLLM GHSA-g5ff-637f-6q2m: upgrade to 1.95.0
LiteLLM's 1 October advisory rates an arbitrary file read High (CVSS 8.1, no CVE): an authenticated internal_user_viewer can pull environment variables and API keys off the proxy. Versions before 1.95.0 are affected and there is no configuration workaround.
Vercel Eve 0.78.0 closes a privilege escalation
Release notes for eve@0.78.0, dated 13 October, say approved calls now always run as the requester. Before, the approver's identity and credentials could be used, letting a requester reach access they did not have.
In review, not yet published
None of these drafts has passed our source review, so we report no figures from them yet: GitHub Copilot's model deprecations, the Gemini API's storage default for new paid projects, the Cloudflare Workers AI GLM-5.3 exposure, planted AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md files in Downloads folders, Claude Code 2.1.311, GPT-6.1 Terra, LiteLLM's attack-chain root cause and its Private Registry, Kimi K3.1 Pro, OpenAI's offline frontier training, Cohere's Qwen3.8-Flash-Next findings, unified Claude Enterprise, Codex CLI 0.164 to 0.166, the x402 SDK spending cap, JetBrains ThinkRail, Mistral Large 4 weights and pricing, API credits for ChatGPT Pro and Business, OpenAI's Evals and Agent Builder shutdowns, Gemini 4 Carbon, Claude Code's background status line cost, GitHub Copilot Fusion, Copilot in GitHub Enterprise, Nemotron 3.5 Transcribe, Cursor's Agent SDK, Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5, ElevenLabs API deprecations, leaked keys on Gitee, fake desktop app repos, GitHub's npm package firewall, Anthropic's exploit-chain disclosure, Xint's compaction finding and Liquid AI LFM3. Muse Spark Open and a DeepSeek peak-window correction passed review but are not yet live. Our GPT-6 Astra figures correction was updated on October 31 and is live; Astra stays conditional.
Claude Code extension scope claims
Some early reports said Open VSX or Microsoft Marketplace builds of the extension were also affected. Cursor and OpenSourceMalware say only Cursor's marketplace served them, and Anthropic has made no statement. Held until Anthropic or the registries confirm either way.
Deprecations and allowances still unconfirmed
OpenAI's Help Center page on OpenAI models in Cursor could not be read this week, so the wind-down still stands as proposed with a 12 November transition period and no termination date. A blog claim that OpenAI halved the Codex allowance on its $200 tier has no OpenAI page behind it yet.
Security items with no AI tool named
Ransomware affiliates using an autonomous red team framework, two Wasmtime sandbox escapes, Apple's macOS guidance on the compromised eMudhra certificates and hosted providers for abliterated DeepSeek models. None names a model, harness or tool a reader runs. Held until one does.
Launches read only as a title or feed summary
OpenAI's updated Model Spec and its post on detecting misalignment, Google's developer platform for Gemini and Search, Opera WebAI, Mistral's cybersecurity variant of Large 4, Claude Enterprise smart reports, the Gemini API CLI beta, Block's Dessa speech model and the Hurston-1 TTS model. Held until a primary page shows a model, price, release or behaviour change.
Policy, litigation and research held at headline level
Swedish government offices banning ChatGPT and Claude, Google's Gmail and Photos ad policy, the Stanford authors' claim against Anthropic, a lawsuit over GPT-4o advice, a Wikimedia warning on an AI copyright ruling, Deepgram buying Daily (maker of Pipecat) and a claim that five Qwen3.8-27B models match Fable 5. Nothing read changes a product yet.
Open verdict watches
Moves of GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o to caution are staged from OpenAI's removal dates and land only when a carrying post publishes. Mistral Large 4 stays conditional after its weights shipped, and LiteLLM and the OpenAI Decisions API stay conditional with refreshed summaries staged.

Our take: Our verdict on this week: if you run the Claude Code extension in Cursor, check for the svc-telemetry SSH key today, and start no new work on Claude Opus 5, Claude Haiku 4.5 or GPT-5.6 Sol. Cursor says malicious builds of the extension (2.1.312 and 2.1.313, macOS and Windows) were live on its marketplace from about 2:27am to 1:35pm PT on 29 October, and that uninstalling may not remove the persistence they add. Cursor says Anthropic did not build them, and nobody has said how they were published under Anthropic's extension ID. Our ratings on Cursor and Claude Code stay conditional. Claude Code 2.1.314 then fixed a bug that let sessions start with no managed policy when the settings server was unreachable, and 2.1.312 sends the shorter system prompt to custom model names on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and Mantle. Three ratings dropped from recommended to conditional because a cheaper successor lists below them: Claude Opus 5 against Opus 5.5 at $4/$20 per 1M tokens, Claude Haiku 4.5 against Haiku 5.5 at a tenth of the per-token price up to 100K, and GPT-5.6 Sol against GPT-6 Sol at $2/$10. Two rose from pending to conditional: Gemini 4 Argon, generally available on the paid Gemini API at $2/$10 until 30 November, and Qwen3.8-Max at an official $2/$6. Cursor stays conditional after rebuilding its plans from Plus at $8 to Ultra at $200, with third party models billed on top. Most of the stories from this week's own scans, including GitHub Copilot's model deprecations, the Gemini API's new storage default and the Cloudflare Workers AI exposure, are still drafts in review, so their figures are not in this issue. How we count: two daily scans on October 27 and 30 and a second pass on October 30 fetched 139 items (58, 61 and 20). The scout kept 11 act and 25 fyi stories, filed 0 verdict claims, and logged 23 watch stories and 56 noise rows. All 36 kept stories became news drafts, and none was rejected. Source review ran on October 27, 30 and 31 and passed 23 drafts (5, 5 and 13), 3 of them from this week's scans. Five ratings moved, all announced on October 31. Verification on October 26 and 29 checked 110 directory entries (67 and 43) and drafted 14 news posts (2 and 12). Directory growth on October 30 added 3 models, 1 tool and 3 comparisons, and review turned down 3 more proposals after two fix passes. A site audit on October 27 logged 40 findings across 11 pages. Translation backfills ran on October 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31 and November 1.
