Zapier AI steps hit model-tier pricing — default is 3x

AI by Zapier no longer charges a flat per-task rate. Starting June 15, 2026, every AI step you run costs 1x, 3x, or 5x the base task rate depending on which model tier you pick — and the default is Advanced (3x). If you haven't checked your Zaps yet, your bills just tripled.

What happened

Zapier replaced flat pricing for AI steps with three model tiers (Zapier Help Center, 2026):

The base per-step task cost multiplies by your chosen tier. Tool calls — each API lookup or data transformation your AI step performs — add to the total at the same multiplier. A Premium step with three tool calls at 5x each lands at 20x the base cost of a flat Standard call.

A 75-task cap per step pauses runaway Zaps before they drain your budget, but that's a circuit breaker, not cost control.

New steps default to Advanced (3x). Zapier frames this as enabling tool calling out of the box, but it also means the costliest non-Premium tier is the path of least resistance. You can switch to Standard (no tools) or bring your own AI account for 1x pricing. The pricing applies to Professional, Team, and Enterprise plans.

Why it matters

We rate Zapier as conditional — great for low-volume no-code automation, but per-task pricing already makes it expensive at scale. This change compounds the scaling problem.

The old flat model let you predict costs per automation. The new model-tier system introduces three multipliers stacked on tool-call counts. If your AI workflow makes three API calls on Advanced, you burn through tasks 9x faster than you budgeted for.

Zapier is the largest integration library in the automation space with 7,000+ app connectors, and AI features have been the growth story. Making those AI features 3–5x more expensive by default is a real squeeze on teams that adopted Zapier specifically for its AI capabilities.

The alternatives look better by comparison. n8n — which we run in production and rate as recommended — offers native AI agent nodes with predictable per-execution pricing and full self-hosting. Make provides visual AI workflow design at lower per-operation cost. Both give you cost certainty Zapier just walked away from.

What changes for you

1. Check every AI Step's tier right now. Open your Zaps, find AI by Zapier steps, and verify the model tier. The default is Advanced — if a Standard model handles the work, you're overpaying 3x per run.
2. Audit your tool-call counts. Each tool call inside an AI step multiplies by your tier. A Premium step calling three tools at 5x each spends 20 tasks in one shot. If you don't need that horsepower, drop to Standard (1x) or Advanced (3x) and cut your tool calls.
3. Bring your own AI key if you qualify. Zapier lets you connect your own AI account for 1x pricing. If you're already paying for an API provider directly, this eliminates the multiplier overhead.
4. Compare n8n or Make if your AI volume is growing. If you're running more than occasional AI automations, the per-execution models from n8n and Make avoid the tier-multiplier trap entirely.

FAQ

Does this affect my existing Zaps? Yes. If you built AI steps before June 15, 2026, they default to the Advanced (3x) tier unless you've manually changed them. Check every AI step's configuration now.

What's the difference between the tiers? Standard is basic AI processing without tool calls. Advanced adds tool calling with a mid-tier model. Premium adds the strongest available model plus tool calling. If you don't use tools or need sophisticated reasoning, Standard at 1x is the right choice.

Can I avoid the multiplier entirely? Partially. Bringing your own AI provider account locks you at 1x per step regardless of tier. But tool calls — if you use them — still consume tasks. The only way to fully control per-step cost is to use Standard (1x) without tool calls, or switch to a platform with a different pricing model.
