Report: OpenAI Pauses New $200 ChatGPT Pro Sign-Ups Over Astra Demand

What happened
TechCrunch reports that OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux said on X that new sign-ups to the $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan are paused, because Pro puts the most strain on OpenAI's systems.
Why it matters
New buyers cannot get Pro, and no end date was given. The API, Go and Plus stay open, and TechCrunch reports Plus, Business and Enterprise include Astra.
What to do
Reach Astra through the API at $10/$50 per 1M tokens or through Plus, and do not cancel an existing Pro plan expecting to re-subscribe.

Do not plan around ChatGPT Pro this month. OpenAI has paused new sign-ups to the $200-a-month plan with no end date given, according to TechCrunch's report of an OpenAI executive's post on X. If GPT-6 Astra is why you wanted Pro, two routes are open today: the API at $10 input and $50 output per 1M tokens on short context, or Plus, Business and Enterprise, which TechCrunch reports include Astra. Our Astra entry rates the model conditional, and this pause does not change the rating.

What happened

Thibault Sottiaux, who leads core products including Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, announced the pause on X. As TechCrunch relayed it on 10 September:

  • Why Pro. Pro subscriptions put the most strain on OpenAI's systems, which is why new sign-ups to that tier are being disabled.
  • The framing. OpenAI wanted to "take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible".
  • What stays open. The API, Go and Plus.
  • The warning. The day before, Sottiaux said "demand for Astra is really unprecedented".

TechCrunch also reports that Astra is available on Plus, Business and Enterprise as well as Pro.

We re-checked TechCrunch's report on 18 September. It carries no update saying the pause has been lifted.

What we do not know

  • Duration. OpenAI has not said how long the pause lasts.
  • Existing subscribers. TechCrunch's report does not say whether current Pro subscriptions are affected.
  • Scale. OpenAI gave no sign-up or demand figures.

We read TechCrunch's report, not the X post itself. Treat this as OpenAI's statement as reported, not as a published policy.

Why it matters

A subscription path to a frontier model can close overnight when capacity runs short. That makes the metered API the more predictable way to reach Astra. Whether it costs more than Pro depends on your volume. Our launch coverage sets out where Astra is worth its $10/$50 rate and where it is not.

What changes for you

  • About to buy Pro for Astra? Run your evaluation through the API instead: $10/$50 per 1M tokens on short context, $20/$75 on long context.
  • Already on Pro? Do not cancel on the assumption you can sign up again. No end date for the pause has been given.
  • On Plus, Business or Enterprise? Check what your plan already includes before assuming you need Pro at all.
