GPT-4o Goes Conditional — Delisted from OpenAI Pricing
- What happened
- OpenAI removed GPT-4o from its API pricing page as the GPT-5.x family supersedes it.
- Why it matters
- GPT-4o remains accessible but is no longer a first-class API offering — continuing to call it 'Recommended' is stale advice.
- What to do
- Teams still on GPT-4o should audit production workloads and plan migration to GPT-5.x or alternatives like Claude Sonnet 5.
GPT-4o moves from Recommended → Conditional. It has been delisted from OpenAI's flagship API pricing page and superseded by the GPT-5.x family. You can still call it, but you shouldn't build new workloads on it.
What Changed for GPT-4o
OpenAI's API pricing page(opens in new tab) now lists only GPT-5.5, GPT-5.5-pro, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4-mini, GPT-5.4-nano, and GPT-5.4-pro under "Flagship models." GPT-4o is gone — not in multimodal models, not in specialized models, not anywhere.
This follows the February 2026 retirement(opens in new tab) of GPT-4o from ChatGPT.
Why Conditional, Not Avoid
GPT-4o is still accessible via the API for existing integrations, and OpenAI hasn't announced a hard API sunset date. But it's no longer a current-generation model. The verdict reflects that: use it only where migration is blocked, and plan your exit.
| Dimension | GPT-4o | GPT-5.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Input/Output | $2.50 / $10 | $5 / $30 |
| Context | 128K tokens | 1M+ tokens |
| Status | Legacy, API-only | Current flagship |
What to Do
- Audit: Identify any production workloads still pinned to GPT-4o
- Migrate: GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 are the direct replacement anchors — comparable latency, better capability, similar cost
- Recalibrate: If you're evaluating models today, GPT-4o should not be on your shortlist
FAQ
Can I still use GPT-4o via the API?
Yes. GPT-4o is still callable for existing integrations, and OpenAI has not announced a hard API sunset date. But it is no longer listed on the flagship pricing page and should not anchor new workloads.
What should I migrate to?
GPT-5.5 ($5/$30) is the direct OpenAI replacement for most GPT-4o workloads — generally available, better capability, comparable cost. If budget-constrained, evaluate GPT-5.4-mini ($0.75/$4.50).
