Anthropic cancels the Claude Sonnet 5 price rise: $2/$10 is now the standard rate

Verdict: Claude Sonnet 5 stays recommended, and it is cheaper than our directory said. Anthropic has made the $2 input / $10 output per 1M token launch price the standard rate and cancelled the increase to $3/$15 that was scheduled for 1 September 2026. At that price Claude Sonnet 5 undercuts Claude Sonnet 4.6 by a third and costs 40 percent of Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8.
What happened
Sonnet 5 launched on 30 June 2026 at $2/$10 per 1M tokens, described as introductory pricing through 31 August 2026, with $3/$15 scheduled to follow. On 10 August 2026 Anthropic edited the launch announcement(opens in new tab) to make that price permanent, and its API pricing page, re-read on 14 September 2026, carries this note:
The $2/$10 per million input/output token pricing for Claude Sonnet 5, announced at launch as introductory pricing through August 31, 2026, is now the standard price. The previously scheduled increase to $3/$15 per million input/output tokens on September 1, 2026 will not occur.

Why it matters
We had it wrong. Our directory entry listed Sonnet 5 at $3/$15. That was never a live rate: it was the announced successor price, and Anthropic cancelled it. From 1 September until we corrected the price fields on 9 September, anyone pricing a Sonnet 5 workload from our page overestimated it by 50 percent. The price fields now read $2/$10, but the standing verdict summary still calls $2/$10 introductory pricing ending 31 August and puts Sonnet 5 at "roughly half" the Opus price. This post replaces that summary. Our Sonnet 4.6 entry also still says Sonnet 5 arrived "at the same rate card", which is out of date.

The tokenizer caveat survives. Anthropic states that Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that "produces approximately 30% more tokens for the same text", and that the exact increase depends on content and workload shape. Sonnet 4.6 uses the previous tokenizer. A migration from Sonnet 4.6 gets a 33 percent lower posted rate and pays it on more tokens. At the 30 percent figure that nets to roughly a 13 percent saving; your workload can land either side of it.
What changes for you
- Budgeting Sonnet 5: re-price anything built from our page between 1 and 9 September at $2/$10, or $1/$5 on the Batch API.
- Migrations parked for the increase: release them. The $3/$15 rate is not coming.
- Migrating from Sonnet 4.6: count tokens on your real prompts against Sonnet 5 before committing a budget. The saving is real but smaller than the headline.
- Choosing between Sonnet and Opus: Opus now costs 2.5 times Sonnet 5 on input, output, batch and cache lines. Default to Sonnet 5 and reserve Opus for the work that needs it.

Is the $3/$15 increase delayed or cancelled? Cancelled. Anthropic's wording is that the scheduled increase "will not occur", and the pricing page gives no new date.
Is Sonnet 5 cheaper than Sonnet 4.6? On posted rates, yes: $2/$10 against $3/$15. On a real bill the newer tokenizer's roughly 30 percent token inflation eats part of that, so measure your own workload.
Does this change your verdict? The rating stays recommended. The summary changes: the price is standing, not introductory, and Sonnet 5 costs 40 percent of the Opus rate.
