Cowork Is Now Just Claude: Chat and Cowork Merge, Claude Docs and Claude Slides Arrive in Beta

Our take: nothing to do yet, and nothing costs more. The one change worth your attention is a setting, not a feature. When the merge reaches your plan, keep ask-before-acting on until you have watched what Claude does unprompted in your own accounts.

Affected: the Claude app (chat and Cowork). It has no entry in our directory yet, so there is no standing verdict to update, and we have not tested the merged app ourselves.

What happened

On 16 September 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, across the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile. You no longer choose between chat and Cowork. In Anthropic's words, "Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation."

Rollout

• Pro and Max: over the next few weeks.
• Team and Free: soon after.
• Enterprise: admins get at least 30 days' notice before the change takes effect.

What comes with it

• Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Launched in beta on paid plans on 16 September. You can edit directly, present from Claude, or export to PowerPoint or PDF. Enterprise admins decide when these switch on.
• Claude Design. If you use it on its own, it keeps working as before. Its capabilities are now also available from any conversation.
• Scheduled tasks. Recurring work runs without a prompt. Anthropic's example: schedule a report for every Monday and Claude starts on it without being asked.
• Ask before acting. On by default. You can change it so Claude keeps working and checks in only when something needs a closer look. You keep the final say on the work.

Why it matters

The Claude subscription you already pay for gains document, slide and scheduled-task surfaces in the same place you chat. Anthropic says the split was causing friction: work started in chat did not carry into Cowork, and the reverse. Merging them removes that choice.

The bigger shift is autonomy. Scheduled tasks plus ask-before-acting switched off means Claude can start and continue work you did not prompt in that moment. That is useful for a weekly report and a risk anywhere Claude can act on accounts or data you care about.

What changes for you

• Pro and Max: expect the merged app over the next few weeks. Docs and Slides are already in beta on paid plans.
• Team and Free: no date yet beyond "soon".
• Enterprise admins: watch for Anthropic's notice, at least 30 days ahead. You decide when Docs and Slides switch on, so plan that alongside the merge.
• Everyone: leave ask-before-acting on at first. Turn it off only for tasks where an unprompted action cannot do damage.
