Qwen-Image-2.1 is Alibaba's open-weights model for both text-to-image generation and editing, with native transparent RGBA output and multi-image composition from up to 10 references. Conditional because the weights ship under the Qwen Research License, which allows non-commercial use only, and we found no readable benchmark scores. Right for researchers and hobbyists running image generation and editing locally through Diffusers.

Good for
- Generating and editing in one model: text-to-image plus edits marked by circles, painted annotations or separate masks
- Assets that need transparency: native RGBA layer generation
- Composing from up to 10 reference images, with Alibaba stating that edits keep faces and products consistent
- Local pipelines already on Diffusers, through the QwenImage21Pipeline class
Not good for
- Commercial use: the Qwen Research License is for non-commercial purposes only, and commercial use needs a separate license from Alibaba
- Choosing on benchmarks: Alibaba's Qwen-Image-Bench comparison gives no scores in readable text, and we found no independent evaluation
