GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI · Released Sep 2026
Conditional on evidence: GPT-6.1 Sol is OpenAI's model for complex coding, computer use and professional work, which OpenAI itself describes as near-Astra performance at a lower cost. We could not read the launch post, so no benchmark is stored and the quality claim is OpenAI's alone. Prompts past 272K input tokens bill at higher rates, and reasoning cannot be set to none or minimal. Suits teams building agents on the Responses API who will run their own evals first.
Is it right for you?
Good for
- Complex coding, computer use and professional work, the use OpenAI names on its model page
- Long inputs: a 1,050,000-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens
- Batch and Flex jobs at 50% below standard rates, $1 input and $5 output per 1M tokens at short context
- Tool-heavy agents: web search, file search, code interpreter, hosted shell, apply patch, skills, computer use, MCP and tool search
- Delegating to subagents inside one Responses API request, in beta
- US and EU data residency
Not good for
- Budgeting off the headline rate on long prompts: over 272K input tokens it bills $4 input and $15 output per 1M
- Low-latency uses that need none or minimal reasoning effort: neither is supported
- Fast mode with EU data residency: unavailable, and Fast mode is 2x the standard rate
- Audio, video or image output: it takes text and images and returns text only
How it performs by task
