Perplexity Computer is a credible general-purpose agent for long, multi-step work: it turns a stated outcome into subtasks run by sub-agents in an isolated cloud sandbox, and Portable mode can run the whole loop on your own GPU. Conditional because cloud work is metered in credits that do not roll over, and the entry paid plan includes no monthly allocation, so heavy use means top-ups or the top plan. Right for knowledge workers who will watch the meter; we have not tested it.

  • Recurring jobs through Portable's scheduled tasks, which run with a local model on your own hardware
  • Tasks spanning Gmail, Outlook, Slack, GitHub and local MCP servers

Not good for

  • Predictable monthly cost: cloud work is metered in credits and unused credits do not roll over
  • Local-only use on ordinary laptops: Portable on Windows needs an NVIDIA RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM
