# Gemini 2.5 Pro Drops to Conditional: Google Limits Access to Past Users

Google now limits Gemini 2.5 model access to users who actively used them before and tells new projects to use 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash. We are moving Gemini 2.5 Pro from recommended to conditional: fine if you already run it, wrong for anything new.

By Neomanex. Updated 2026-10-23.

**Verdict: [Gemini 2.5 Pro](/models/gemini-25-pro) moves from recommended to conditional.** Keep it if you already call `gemini-2.5-pro`. Do not start a new project on it. For new Google-stack work, use one of the two models Google itself names: [Gemini 3.8 Flash](/models/gemini-3-8-flash) or [Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite](/models/gemini-3-5-flash-lite), both rated recommended in our directory.

Our entry called 2.5 Pro "the budget long-context pick" and recommended it to cost-conscious teams. Google's own Gemini API docs now say new users may not get it at all. A recommendation a new reader cannot act on is not a recommendation.

## What happened

Google's Gemini API deprecations page states, under the Gemini 2.5 model tables:

> "To ensure reliable performance for everyone, we are limiting access to the 2.5 models to users who have actively used them in the past. These models are not deprecated and will continue to be served until further notice through the API. For any new projects, use our latest models: 3.5 Flash-Lite or 3.8 Flash."

The `gemini-2.5-pro` row lists "No shutdown date announced". We re-checked the page on 23 October 2026 and the note is still there.

What this is not:

- **Not a deprecation.** Google says so in the same paragraph.
- **Not a shutdown.** No shutdown date is listed. Claims of a mid-October 2.5 Pro shutdown are not backed by Google's page, and we are not repeating them.
- **Not dated.** Google does not say when the access limit started. The page's "last updated" stamp is the date of the page, not of the note.

## Why it matters

- **New teams may be locked out.** Access depends on past active use, so a team that picks 2.5 Pro today from our old recommendation could hit a wall on its first call.
- **Google is steering traffic away.** The note names 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.8 Flash as the models for new work. It names no successor Pro model.
- **"Until further notice" is not a commitment.** Existing users keep access for now, but Google has reserved the right to end it with notice.

## What changes for you

| | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Rating | Recommended | Conditional |
| Right for | Cost-conscious teams wanting a budget long-context model | Teams that already call `gemini-2.5-pro` and want to keep a working pipeline |
| Wrong for | (none stated) | Any new project |

1. **Already on Gemini 2.5 Pro:** nothing breaks today. Start testing on 3.8 Flash or 3.5 Flash-Lite anyway, so a future notice does not catch you unprepared.
2. **Starting a new project:** do not build on 2.5 Pro. Use one of the two models Google names.

We have not run 2.5 Pro against either replacement on our own workloads, so benchmark your own tasks before switching.

## FAQ

**Is Gemini 2.5 Pro deprecated?** No. Google's page says the 2.5 models "are not deprecated and will continue to be served until further notice through the API."

**Is there a shutdown date?** No. The `gemini-2.5-pro` row reads "No shutdown date announced".

**What should a new project use instead?** Google names 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.8 Flash. Both are rated recommended in our directory.
