AI-first code editor with agent integration and Grok model access, now part of SpaceX

**Verdict: conditional.** The most polished AI editor experience today, and no longer independent: Cursor's own blog announced on August 14, 2026 that it has officially been acquired by SpaceX. The condition is cost. Usage-based pricing makes spend unpredictable for heavy agent-mode users, and the higher agent limits sit on Pro+ at $60/mo and Ultra at $200/mo, so budget before you standardize on it. Cursor is a fork of VS Code rebuilt around AI pair programming: inline edits, codebase-aware chat, and an agent mode that plans and executes multi-file changes. It supports frontier models from multiple providers and keeps the full VS Code extension ecosystem. The SpaceX acquisition is now documented from both sides. SpaceX's Form 8-K filed with the SEC records that on June 16, 2026 Space Exploration Technologies Corp., its wholly owned subsidiary X67 Inc., and Anysphere, Inc. ("Cursor") entered into an Agreement and Plan of Merger at an implied equity value of Cursor of $60.0 billion, with Cursor shares converting into SpaceX Class A common stock, and that SpaceX expected the merger to close during the third quarter of 2026. Cursor's own blog then announced on August 14, 2026 that "Cursor has officially been acquired by SpaceX". The rate card has since been rebuilt. When we read cursor.com/pricing on September 14, 2026 it listed Pro+ at $60 a month and Ultra at $200. When we read it on October 15, 2026 it listed Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30 (4x Plus usage), Super at $100 (15x), Ultra at $200 (50x), Teams from $30 per user per month and Enterprise on custom pricing, with annual prices of $80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000 for the four paid individual tiers. The page says third party model usage is not included in the monthly prices shown. The June 2026 move from per-seat to usage-based pricing changed the cost math for teams: light users got cheaper, heavy agent-mode users got significantly more expensive.
